Llanidloes to Rhayader via the Mid Wales Bunkhouse

This route is primarily intended for cyclists. It could be walked, but a better alternative on foot is to follow Glyndwrs Way National Trail. For the most part it follows quiet country lanes used by just a few local vehicles. It leaves the Severn valley at Llanidloes and climbs to cross high farmland in excess of 300m above sea level. There are a number of fairly steep but short ups and downs. The scenery is second to none throughout with a most dramatic view of the Llandinam wind farm from Llidiartywaun school. The watershed between the rivers Severn and Wye is finally crossed close to where the route joins Glyndwr’s Way. From here it is gentle riding all the way to the Mid Wales Bunkhouse. From there it is essentially downhill to Rhayader, although there are a couple of uphill stretches, passing through glorious sheep farming country and old woodland. There is also the possibility of a short diversion to the Gilfach Nature Reserve.

The alternative via the B4518 is equally as dramatic, but is along a slightly busier road and features a long and steep decent and climb at Tylwch.

The route.

Start (green flag). From the market hall proceed along China Street and then Smithfield Street, turning left into Bryn-du Road, B4518. The road then climbs quite steeply for about 1.5km until you reach route point 1. .

Route points 1 to 2. To continue on the recommended route take the road on the left (straight on) signed ‘Llidiartywaun’ continuing straight ahead at the crossroads at route point 2.

Route points 2 to 3. Continue straight ahead passing lanes on both the left and right until arriving at Llidiartywaun school. Here you have dramatic views across Nant Feinion to the Llandinam wind farm.

Route points 3 to 4. Keeping Llidiartywaun school on your right continue on the road that bears round to the right and downhill. A short climb will then bring you to route point 4.

Route points 4 to 5. At route point 4 bear to the left and then, within 100 metres, to the right. Follow this lane, passing Beulah chapel on the left, and continuing straight across the crossroads at Garth Fawr. Eventually you will see Glyndwr’s Way joining on the left. Again continue ahead to route point 5.

Route points 5 to 7. At route point 5 take the road bearing to the right, continuing straight ahead at route point 6.

Route point 7 to Mid Wales Bunkhouse. At route point 7 turn left. It is here that our route is joined by the alternative via the B4518. Continue to route point 8, where the Mid Wales Bunkhouse will be found on the right at Woodhouse Farm, as indicated by the finger post. You are assured a warm welcome, but please phone first or book to be sure of a bed. Camping, caravanning and tipi rental (summer) is also available.

Mid Wales Bunkhouse to Rhayader. Turn right out of the Mid Wales Bunkhouse driveway at route point 8 and continue to the end of the lane, passing the unmade tracks on the left before the old railway bridge and crossing the bridge over the River Marteg. At route point 9 turn left onto the B4518. Turn right outside the Sun Inn in St. Harmon at route point 10 and continue for about 1.5km. Take the first road on the left (route point 11) and follow this lane all the way to Rhayader, where you are able to follow the ‘Wye Valley Walk’ signs to the centre of town.
